The Renouer programme

Six modules, like six knots on a single thread.

A progressive 8 to 12 week pathway, at your own pace. The order matters: you do not write the letter before letting go of anger, you do not re-establish contact before changing how you see the story.

1
Weeks 1–2 · Understanding · Understanding

Putting words to what is happening to you

You are not alone, you are not a monster, and you are not a “failed” parent. This module replaces shock with understanding: what you are experiencing has a name, follows known patterns, and affects millions of families. Understanding does not heal, but we cannot repair what we do not understand.

2
Weeks 3–4 · Letting go · Letting go

Letting go of anger, shame, and the need to be right

This module may feel like a detour: you want to act, write, call. The research is clear: attempts made in the heat of the moment, driven by anger or a sense of injustice, almost always fail, and every failed attempt makes the next one harder. Let go first, act afterwards.

3
Weeks 5–6 · Changing perspective · Changing perspective

Seeing the story through your child’s eyes

The most demanding module in the programme, and the strongest predictor of success. The parents who reconnect are not those who were right: they are those who managed to find the kernel of truth in their child’s grievances without falling apart or arguing their case. Take your time here. Everything else depends on it.

4
Weeks 7–8 · Writing · Writing

The letter of amends, word by word

The programme’s central tool. Dr Coleman’s “letter of amends” is the most extensively documented approach to reopening a closed door. This module gives you the theory; the “My Letter” tab guides you through the writing process, step by step, with automatic saving.

5
Weeks 9–10 · Reconnecting · Reconnecting

Re-establishing contact and staying the course

The letter has been sent, or is about to be. This module prepares you for three scenarios: a reply, silence, or refusal. This is where most spontaneous attempts fail, through haste or discouragement. Re-establishing contact is not a single event: it is a process, with its own cycles.

6
Weeks 11–12 · Living · Living

Building a full life, with or without a reply

The module that all the other approaches overlook. A well-documented paradox: parents who rebuild a rich life are also those whose children return most often. This module is not a consolation prize: it is both your protection and your best strategy.
